I have been diagnosed with depression, what are my next steps?

The prognosis for treatment of depression is good.   Depression is a treatable mental health condition that may occur at one point in time or cyclical- over the course of a lifespan.   There are many schools of thought on the origin of depression.  From a medical model perspective, depression may be the result of a deficiency of neurotransmitters or other chemicals.  However, from a sociological perspective- or the person-in-his environment, depression could be the result of limited resources, environmental stressors, and limited support systems.  Despite the model or paradigm of the origin of depression, I am sure that all parties can agree that depression is not pleasurable  and the goal for most people is to alleviate symptoms.   So, what are some ways that depression is treated?
While many people opt for an antidepressants or other pharmaceuticals only, mental health counseling is a critical element in the development of coping skills to learn new ways of coping with this condition.  Actually, the value of mental health treatment is gaining a better understanding of one's self, gaining an understanding of the mental health condition, and developing specific coping patterns to manage and cope with this condition.
Individuals who are suffering from depression may benefit from group or individual therapy.  Family and social support is critical and it is important for individuals to utilize their support systems during this time.  Lastly, hobbies, interests, and spirituality (prayer) can provide a sense of balance and purpose.
