Are you willing to do the work?

A common misconception that people have when they begin therapy is that simply showing up to the therapist's office is all they need to do.  Often people believe that after 2 or 3 sessions, that they will walk away from therapy and all of the reasons that brought them in to therapy will be resolved.   In order for psychotherapy to be effective, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO DO THE WORK!  This means that you must be willing and committed to taking your time and resources in learning ways to ameliorate your functioning over time.     Self-knowledge is the goal of therapy, and the role of the therapist is to help you acquire the skills to manage your life effectively.  Good luck in your therapeutic pursuits!!!
