Anxiety and COVID-19

Dear The Healing Space:

The Centers for Disease Control is telling us to "stay at home".  As much as I would like to stay at home, I must go out to shop for groceries, run errands, and go to the doctor.   How do I manage my fear and anxiety about going out for necessary items during COVID-19?
                                                                                 Sincerely,
                                                                                 Anxious about leaving my house

Answer:   Dear Anxious about leaving my house,
Following the Center for Disease Control guidelines is a protective layer against being exposed to the coronavirus.   Here are some recommendations for managing your anxiety:

1. Start a grounding ritual to manage your emotions each day.  For example, you may spend some time each morning practicing yoga, praying, mediating, or walking.

2. Create a "process journal" to manage your feelings and emotions.  When you are feeling anxious, use your journal to reflect on your thoughts.

3.  Deep Breathing- If you are feeling overwhelmed in public, spend a few moments in place and simply breathe.  This intake of oxygen can create a natural calming effect.

4.  Use positive self-talk.  Telling yourself positive messages about going out, use positive affirmations when you are out in public, and try to focus on gratitude.

5.   Begin virtual therapy to address this growing anxiety.  Many insurance companies offer tele-therapy or may provide resources to members.  Contact 411, mental health non-profits such as NAMI, or other local resources in your area.  Use the SAMSHA link to search for local providers in your zip code.
