A Lesson Learned- The Importance of Healthy Relationships

I was listening to a speech about one young's man's quest to obtain the position of valedictorian.   While he celebrated his accomplishment, he noted that while he initially had some excitement over the attainment of his goal, he realized that the euphoria that he thought that he would feel was diminished.   He instead reflected on what he learned and the importance of his relationships.

While this blog focuses on mental health issues, the art of balance is critical for good emotional/mental  health.  We are social creatures that thrive on our relationships with others.  Having a good emotional support system is the foundation of good physical and mental health.  A lack of quality and meaningful relationships can contribute to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Perhaps, you have discovered that your relationships have diminished over time.   What are some ways that you can rediscover relationships or improve your existing relationships?

1.  Cultivate relationships with others with similar interests.  If you have an interest in photography, join in-person or online groups.

2.  Join a church or other religious groups. Churches offer social and spiritual support.

3.  Explore group therapy to increase social interactions and address issues that may impact your ability to develop meaningful relationships.

4.  Join an on-line support group, Zoom group, or academic course.

5. Ask for support from friends or family members.

6. Plan social activities with others on a weekly basis and commit to attend social events.

7. Join a book group or other similar group.

8. Invest in your relationships through ongoing communication and time.   Create the life that you want for yourself.
