Depression & Dysthymia

Many people describe depression as "being down" or "having the blues".  In laymen's terms, depression is a state of persistent sadness that may be characterized by mood swings, anger, irritability, changes in sleep, and/or thoughts of self-harm or one would be better off dead.  Depression may be mild, moderate, or severe.   Many people express a loss of motivation, difficulty enjoying activities or interests that were previously enjoyable, or feelings that you are letting yourself or your family down.   People tend to experience some or all of these symptoms.   Depression tends to be cyclical- meaning it comes and goes in cycles. There may be times when you are feeling depressed and other times when you feel okay about your life, your experiences, and yourself.

Dysthymia can be described as a "persistent low mood" for a period of 2 years.  It is a type of depression, but is milder in form.    When I think of dysthymia, the character- Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh often comes to mind.   Individuals may be able to function with dysthymia, but may struggle with finding happiness, difficulty with relationships, irritability and other symptoms.

You may not meet the clinical criteria for major depressive disorder but may struggle with a persistent low mood.  Both types of depression make it difficult to function.   You should contact a mental health professional or mention this to your doctor during your annual examination. Many companies offer short-term employee assistance programs to increase work productivity and improve overall emotional, mental, and physical health functioning.
